The Clinch – Basecamp

Sunny Bastards Records, OSU! Records & Clockwork Punk

One of my favourite bands from the last couple of years is Melbourne’s The Clinch, who in a relatively short time have been making some big waves in the street punk scene. The 5 piece of Steve Bunce (Vocals), Luke Mathews (Guitar), Andy Lynch (Guitar), Brendan McRae (Bass), and Sam Barker (Drums) formed in 2017 citing 80’s Oi!, Australian Rock, and traditional union songs as their main influences. They released their excellent debut ‘Our Path Is One’ in 2018 which was later picked up by Sunny Bastards for a European release and have now followed this up with the stunning new album ‘Basecamp’.

The band have exceeded my expectations with ‘Basecamp’ as their sound is a bit more developed whilst keeping the things I loved about the first album. There are so many highlights but if I had to pick a few I would go for ‘The Chariot’, ‘Basecamp’, ‘Common Goal’, ‘We’re Coming Up’ but I have to say that they have saved the best until last with the anthemic ‘Claymore’, a stunning sing-along track that for me is one of the best songs the band have written.

The Clinch are a band that everyone needs to check out especially fans of Bishops Green, Bonecrusher, The Cockney Rejects, Cock Sparrer, The Business, The Angels, and Rose Tattoo. With the release of ‘Basecamp,’ the band have shown us that they are one of the best bands in the scene and delivered one of my favourite albums of the year so far.
