Riot City Radio – Anchor in the Storm
Sunny Bastards Records
Riot City Radio are a newish band from Plymouth, UK that have bags of experience in their ranks with (ex)members of Arch Rivals, Hostile Minds and Hard Wax making up a formidable line-up. The 3-piece of Tom Murphy(vocals/guitar), Tom Boutwood(vocals/drums) and Matt Colton(vocals/bass) draw on influences from Oi!, punk, hardcore and ska to create an excellent sound that is fresh and relevant. The band have recently released their debut E.P ‘Anchor in the Storm’ which is available through Sunny Bastards Records.
This E.P. is melodic street punk at it’s absolute best which is hard-hitting, powerful and is packed with driving beats and great riffs and brilliant sing-along choruses and all 3 members of the band sharing the vocal duties. The E.P gets off to one hell of a start with the sublime title track, a catchy well-written anthem that will getting you singing along to in no time and is probably my favourite song. Riot City Radio definitely have the knack at writing anthemic street punk which ‘Our Own Way’ and ‘Stand Strong’ are excellent examples of. ‘One Blood’ brings this impressive debut to an end with more of a ska feel then the previous tracks but is equally as good and wouldn’t be out of place on a Rancid album.
Riot City Radio have delivered a brilliant debut and if their future releases are only half as good as this, they will still make for one hell of a listen. If you like your street punk on the melodic side, then this is a must for your collection.
